The Mission Statement

UMS English Language Center’s mission is to enhance the quality of English language competency among the Faculty members and students. The improved linguistic skills will enable them to cooperate and communicate with international, multicultural environment in the UAE and abroad. English language enhancement will guarantee a success in the fields of research, learning and professional development.

As a unit, we are dedicated to serving the international student population who, because English is not their first language, often need support and additional English instruction prior to beginning their academic programs and during the early months and even years of their programs. Our mission is to support the students in passing internationally recognized English competency tests (such as IELTS, Cambridge exams etc.) and evoke their individual understanding of lifelong learning necessity in rapidly changing and demanding worldwide environment of 21st century.

 

The Mission of the UMS English Language Center is to:
  • Empower our students to become full participants in the university community through excellent instruction in language, cultural awareness, and study skills
  • Assist the students with their improvement of English language skills for smooth communication within the international environment at UMS as well as to support students’ academic needs and connect them to other UMS resources
  • Serve UMS Faculty and departments, helping them to meet the needs of UMS international English speaking students and contributing to academic community
  • Provide quality programs for learners with specialized English needs and goals – IELTS preparation and English language proficiency courses
  • Develop and conduct high quality English language proficiency assessments – placement tests and English level exams
  • Initiate and implement the multicultural dialog and support academic spirit at the University

 

UMS English Language Center Plan for 2018 has the following key goals:

1.      Organize, maintain and develop English language proficiency placement tests and English language courses across all colleges. There are two separated projects for both Faculty members and students:

 

a.      Academic English for Faculty members – IELTS 7.5

b.      English for academic purposes – UMS students – IELTS 5.5

 

2.      Organize and settle English Examination Center for IELTS at UMS

 

3.      Collect information about other internationally recognizable English language proficiency exams that are accredited by The Ministry of Education

4.      Support the UMS library – English language and General Education books, journals and professional materials

 

5.      Collaborate with Dean of Arts and Sciences College in order to implement improvements to GED and ENG syllabuses

 

6.      Initiate, prepare and conduct language, communication and culture workshops for Faculty, UMS students and secondary school learners in the UAE

Goal 1. Organize, maintain and develop English language proficiency placement tests and English language courses across all colleges. There are two separated projects for both Faculty members and students:

 

a. Academic English for Faculty members – IELTS 7.5

b. English for academic purposes – UMS students – IELTS 5.5

 

 

 

 

1. Preparation and conduct the placement test for Faculty members in February 2018

·         The test is already prepared and transferred to a digital form (written part) (completed)

·         The oral part of the test is scheduled on 5th week of February – 18th of Feb (ongoing)

·         The test is to be conducted on the 14th of Feb and analyzed in the 4th week of February (ongoing)

 

 

2.Academic English language course for Faculty members

 

·         2 groups – 2 levels of English level proficiency (elementary and pre-intermediate/intermediate are to be set. Each course will be conducted once a week x 3 hours session (2 parts with 10 min break)

·         The syllabuses and course descriptions are ready (completed)

·         The course is scheduled for 15 weeks

 

3. English for academic purposes – UMS students

·         The syllabuses and course descriptions are ready. (completed)

·         There are 3 levels of courses – IELTS preparation – foundation courses (1), pre intermediate 4-5 IELTS (2), intermediate 5-6.5 (3), and advanced 6.5-7.5 (the last level is optional as the UMS requires 5.5 IELTS band score (ongoing)

·         It is advisable to be offered updated IELTS mock tests from IELTS awarding body such as British Council or IDP (Australian IELTS institution) (ongoing)

 

 

 

 

Goal 2. Organize and settle English Examination Center for IELTS at UMS

 

 

 

 

1.Collect information of the procedures required to organize the Centre

 

 

·         Organize meetings with 2 official institutions that conduct the IELTS tests in Dubai - British Council or/and IDP (International Development Program, IDP - an Australian IELTS institution) (ongoing – February week 3)

·         It is suggested to concentrate on IDP partnership – might be cheaper

 

2.Settle the Center

·         Complete the infrastructure, computer lab, resource and administrative setup for Exam Center launch in summer/fall 2018 (ongoing)

 

Goal 3.Collect information about other internationally recognizable English language proficiency exams that are accredited by The Ministry of Education

 

 

 

1.Gain information concerning other than IELTS internationally recognizable English language proficiency exams - Cambridge

2. Accreditation – Cambridge Exam Center waits for Ministry’s approval thus we restrain from any other action until the final decision.

 

·         Cambridge exam center representative visit (completed)

  • Offer for the UMS English Language Center towards changing it into an attested language center that can provide internationally accredited teaching and testing services - different that IELTS (completed)

Cambridge Testing proposal:

Cambridge representatives showed a tentative road map with placement tests and examinations. It includes :

·         Two versions of placement tests (targeting four skills, computer- based, easy reporting system, clear comparison chart with other international language scales)

·         Teacher Qualification courses: proposing Teaching Knowledge Test Modules 1, 2 and 3. These courses are intended to offer language development for teachers of English and teachers of other subjects in English as part of ELC’s plan for UMS faculty language courses. Certificates are designed for use by Higher Education institutions (not applicable in 2018, additional proposal)

·         Introducing Cambridge Lingua skills tests as an alternative to students struggling with IELTS. The newly implemented test is life- long (no expiry date) that’s accepted worldwide in both educational as well as professional institutions. Similar levelled Lingua skills preparation courses can be conducted to university students to improve their language proficiency (completed)

·         It would be a chance for the UMS to offer a new product in the UAE but easily recognizable in Europe, students could take Cambridge exam after completing education at UMS, it is advisable to take a close look at the issue in the future) (ongoing)

 

·         A pricing proposal including placement tests packages (Lingua skill, CEPT, key, Preliminary, First and Advanced tests is to be sent as soon as possible. (ongoing)

 

 

 

Goal 4. Support the UMS library – English language and General Education books, journals and professional materials

 

1. Help to choose proper books and other academic materials - for GED and ENG courses

2. Help to accommodate already purchased books and materials

·         Check availability of the books, course books, test, listening, reading  materials etc. at the library (completed)

·         Offer new titles to purchase in the nearest future (ongoing)

·         Meeting with Cambridge representative (Mr. Chris Griffiths) to learn about updated materials for ELC and collection of sample materials to be used during GED and ENG classes (in progress)

·         Meeting with Alshegrey (Publishing and Advanced University Services) representative to be offered new teaching materials, books for GED and ENG courses (in progress)

Goal 5. Collaborate with Dean of Arts and Sciences College in order to implement improvements to GED and ENG syllabuses

 

 

1.Checking quality of materials assigned to ENG and GED courses

 

2.General Foundation courses (no credit hours) – suggestion to improve and update the courses

·         Update course materials and books – some English language courses’ levels are advised to be changed and adjusted to students’ needs (in progress)

·         It is advised to revise ENG 101 and 102 courses as well as LNG 100 and 105 – the levels and books (next semester)


·         It is suggested to revise the idea of General Foundation 003 and 004 programs and change the syllabuses so that UMS may support the students in English language and learning skills improvement.(ongoing)

Goal 6. Initiate, prepare and conduct language, communication and culture workshops for Faculty, UMS students and secondary school learners in the UAE

 

1.Prepare a set of lectures and seminars for UMS students and Faculty

2. Invite inspiring speakers to the UMS (general topics – positive thinking, multicultural understanding, success etc.)

3.Visit secondary schools or invite the students to UMS – lectures, workshops

·         ‘ Multicultural environment and possible problems in communication’ (in preparation by ELC (English Language Center)

·         It is suggested to invite all the Faculty members to contribute in the project and ask them to offer the lectures/seminars/workshops in their fields
